Amazon Echo - What Reviews Don't Tell You (Part 4 of 5) - 131 Questions Answered

Posted by TeamDIG.com ➨ Reviews - Questions - Answers
IS THERE A FEE FOR THE CLOUD FEATURE THAT ECHO NEEDS TO USE?

● No I have apple devices and use that and I am an Amazon Prime member but I use my audible books I use the music from pandora and I heart more than my own as they have great music for as many hours as you want whatever genre, I guess some of my books might be in I cloud but there is no additional fee.. But I do have the accounts with other devices. I could use my google drive too.

● I haven't seen any fees yet. I got my Echo 3 weeks ago. I can tell Alexa to play an audiobook I bought via audible and she gets it and plays it.

● There are no fees but you will need a wireless router and your own internet service.

● No, it works through your wifi.

DO I NEED THE WINK HUB TO OPERATE WINK DEVICES OR WILL I JUST NEED ECHO?

● Have no idea. But even if I did I think my ECHO device is a bit off anyway. It answers questions at random in an empty room while nobody is there. Sometimes it just talks to itself. I think it might becoming sentient, slow but sentient. Example a "Wink hub" is to become awake, to stop sleeping. I've gotten stranger answers than that trust me. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

● You will need a Wink hub. I bought the starter kit (3 lights plus the hub) to get started. Hub supports lots of devices. Setup and integration with the Echo was a breeze BTW, took less than 2 minutes.

● You will need a Wink Hub to operate wink devices through the Echo.

● I don't own one, too expensive...

IS THE AMAZON ECHO WIRELESS?

● Yes! Echo (we love to call her Alexa) is wireless. The best part is its SO SO EASY to set up! Just find a good corner where Alexa is safe and accessible for commands from a any room, connect it to your router and you are all set! Once connected to your router, you can move Alexa to another spot, and all you have to do is just plug it in to your outlet and it picks up your signal on its own. May I add that once you use Alexa, you can't imagine your household without her!

● Only for network connection. no Wired option for network. Requires working internet connection to process ANY request.

● It has to be plugged in for power at all times. Uses wifi and bluetooth for connectivity.

● No. It needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet.

DOES THE ECHO COME WITH A REMOTE?

● There is a remote available but you have to purchase it in addition to the Echo. I see the previous answer states that theirs came with one. I went back and checked what's in the box and it does not say that a remote is included. In fact, if you want the remote it is $29.99. I do love mine.

● Yes, the echo comes with a remote. It has a microphone and a couple of other buttons. I HAVE A PREORDER ONE.....

● If I'm not mistaken, the beta version came with remote but current model ships with no remote. Mine came without one.

● Only the beta version. The production version requires remote purchase as an accessory.

● Yes it does come with a remote. Love our Echo.

● Yes, mine did.

● Yes

WILL THE AMAZON ECHO PLAY MY ITUNES? HOW?

● At this point iTunes music needs to be imported. Since they are constantly updating and improving maybe they will eventually link directly. You can find more info here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201619450 Which says "With Amazon Music, you can import your music from iTunes, Windows Media Player, or your computer's music folders." And a link on how to import here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201379280

● It cannot play music directly from your iTunes account, however, you can upload your music from your computer to Amazon and play it that way.

● Thank you!

CAN I HAVE THE ECHO RESPOND TO A NAME OTHER THAN "ALEXA"? I REALLY JUST WANT TO CALL IT "COMPUTER"

● The only other thing that you can call it is Amazon. Its dumb but I think one day they will change that to allow you to call it whatever you want. I really wish that i can call it "Jarvis" or "Kit". LOL

● At the present time you can get its attention by the words Alexa, or Amazon. I understand they are working on more flexibility in the future.

● That may come one day with an update but, right now it's alexa or Amazon.

CAN YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE ECHO?

● Yes. I have one upstairs and one downstairs. Mine is Mainly used as voice control for my lighting. So I needed one for both floors. They are both controlled from the same account and app.

● Yes...but i would be careful not to keep them too close together. otherwise, when you call out "Alexa" and ask a question, you will get a chorus of responses. haha

● Yes. Just follow set up instructions to avoid interaction.

DOES THE AMAZON ECHO WORK AS A PHONE

● No, it doesn't work as a phone, I tried that, too.. Plug it in, can leave it plugged in. "It/Echo" is named Alexa (by Amazon) so you could say "Alexa" - followed by a request, such as "Alexa, play jazz music volume level 4." Or, "Alexa set an alarm for 45 min. from now." And she'll respond "Alarm set for 45 minutes." I've had "her" for a week now & learn every day how better I can word ?'s so that I can get an answer.

● Nope. It won't make calls and it won't receive them.

● No. It's an audio streaming device exclusively

● I just asked Alexa (the echo) and she said no.

WILL THE AMAZON ECHO PLAY ITUNES

● Unfortunately no, that is beyond Alexa's abilities currently. Hopefully in the future we could see a lot more integrative features between other platforms. But what you can do is synch a device running iTunes to your Echo via Bluetooth and then play anything as a functioning Bluetooth speaker with voice commands still enabled. But does not currently stream from iTunes or Google play.

● Yes and you can tell it which playlist on itunes to play and basic commands like next song, play this song from itunes. buy this song. yadayada. Hope that helps. Pandora and local radio stations also. Just say tune in to 98.5 or whatever

● Directly, no. But if your device that has iTunes has Bluetooth, you should be able to pair it with the Echo.

● I believe it does

WILL ECHO WORK GOOD WITH A SLOW INTERNET SPEED AND CAN THE AMAZON ECHO CONTROL DIFFERENT WIRELESS LIGHT IN DIFFERENT ROOMS ONE AT A TIME

● With no internet echo will work with hotspot on cell phone, just as it does on internet. About lighting. There is a box to connect to lamp and outlet. You ask for echo to turn on and it does that. I have not tried it. It is available. Really love my echo

● It will work with a slow internet speed to answer questions but it might have trouble streaming music. Will work with multiple lights at one time. Good luck!

● Yes, echo works fine with slow internet, for music, news, weather for me. For the wireless lights i don't know. WeMo from belkin are the worst in the market.

HOW DO YOU CONNECT ALEXA (AMAZON ECHO) OR WHAT IS THE AMAZON ECHO CONNECTED TO?

● The Echo connects to any wireless network , and is configured using an app that is available for IOS (apple), android , and kindle. Once its configured it uses the wireless on its own.

● The only physical connection is an electric plug. The rest is via wifi, step by step instructions are available. It's the BEST!

● It connects to your wifi and is really simple to setup. She talks you thru it. So easy and so fun.

● Uses your wireless router to connect to the internet and to connect to your phone.

● I plugged it in and went through the setup process from the app on my iphone.

● Alexa connects to your Wi-Fi network

I'M AN AUSSIE WHO HAS LIVED IN THE US FOR 12 YEARS, YET STILL CAN'T BE UNDERSTOOD BY MOST VOICE SYSTEMS - CAN ECHO UNDERSTAND AN AUSTRALIAN ACCENT?

● I've been thinking about this question for awhile now, and while using my Echo, I do not see Alexa having trouble understanding you. My English is not perfect and I use a lot of slang when I speak, and it seems to understand me just fine. When I open the log, I see that it did not pick up each word exactly as I said it, but it's response to me is what I was expecting to hear. So, yes, I believe it would understand you even with the accent.

CAN YOU CHANGE THE VOICE TO A MALE VOICE?

● Not at this point, it's limited to a female voice and one of two names, Alexa or Amazon .I'd deduce that most users would lean to Alexa. Hopefully, we will see updates in the future .

● Nope.. one voice only... that would be a nice option... I would also love to be able to change the key word to something other than Alexa or Amazon... hopefully someday

● No there is no other voices other than the female voice. I'm sure that will be an improvement in the future..... remember it has a female name.

● Not yet; not that I know of. But Alexa has a lot of ongoing improvements, so maybe one day.

● No

DO I NEED AMAZON PRIME TO PLAY AMAZON MUSIC ON ECHO?

● The Echo app has two music collections: "Prime Music" and "Your Amazon Music Library". "Your Music Library" includes music you may have purchased from Amazon plus any other music you have uploaded to the Amazon cloud. Prime membership is not needed to play your music. Prime membership is not needed to play Pandora, and the numerous worldwide radio stations offered on iHeartRadio and TuneIn.

● I believe that's true. Without being the primary prime member - but I am, and have always had access. Of course, you would still have access to pandora, iHeart Radio, etc -and any music you purchased.

● No you don't need Amazon Prime

DOES SHE DO MATH PROBLEMS, GIVE DEFINITION TO WORDS AND SPELL WORDS FOR YOU?

● You betcha. She does all things things and far more. I am continually amazed. Some questions stump her but most times she is right there for you. The price for the unit is far too little for the value of the unit. "Its" has ceased to be "My Echo" and is now merely, "Alexa".

● Yes to all 3 questions, but there is a limit.

WILL THE AMAZON ECHO BOIL EGGS?

● Funny about that! I asked her that very question this morning, and she told me all about the stove, the water, the temperature, etc. And, of course, she was right. I had egg salad sandwiches for dinner tonight.

● No,it wont boil eggs by itself but you can ask her to let you know when three minutes are up starting when the water comes to a boil for a soft boiled egg. Add more time for a hard boiled egg.

● No, it can't boil eggs but, she can tell you how!

● It will guides you through the steps!

● She can tell you how to boil eggs

CAN ECHO BE USED AS A SCRIBE?

● I just asked her to take some notes for me and she didn't understand. She can set reminders, setup a timer and record a grocery list. Not sure what else beyond that for scribing. If you think of a question for her I can ask.

● Not really. You can have it repeat what you say with "Simon Says..." however, it is not like A.L.I.C.E bot.

● Not yet. You could conceivably tell it to add something to your shopping list a few words at a time

● I suppose you could dictate a short sentence or two to the to do list.

WHAT KIND OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEM MUST ONE HAVE PRIOR TO SETTING UP ECHO IN A HOUSE?

● You only need wifi to use Echo... if you're asking what kinds of electronic systems Echo can control (turn on lights etc.) then I think the list is limited but growing.

● You only need wifi and either a smart phone, tablet, or computer. It works great with iPhone or iPad. Easy to set up. Just take it out of box and plug in.

● The Echo requires a WiFi network and something to download the "Echo app" to. I used my iPad. The app takes you through the set up of the Echo.

● Wireless internet

CAN I CHANGE THE NAME OF MY ECHO? I DON'T LIKE CALLING OUT "ALEXA".
I'D BE HAPPY WITH "ECHO".

● Yes, you can change it. You have a two name option. Amazon is your other option. But, before you do, please try Alexa a bit first. I didn't like it either but it grows on you. With Amazon, you would wake it with many conversations. It's best to use Alexa until they open up more wake word options. Be patient.

● You can only call it either Alexa or Amazon at this time. It is a select-able choice in the phone/web portal app.

● Amazon Echo, I believe.

CAN THE VOICE TURN OFF THE MIC?

● YOU don't turn off the mic unless you unplug the unit. Alexa "sleeps" when not in use. When you awaken "her" you simply tell her what you want and, if she can deliver, you've got it. Lot of things "she" cant do but also a lot "she" can.

● No because the puppet masters want to hear everything you say. If you want the mic off. Don't buy it.

● I think the mic is always on, always receiving, as long as the echo has power.

● No it wont. turn off mic

WHY WON'T MY ECHO SOUND MY ALARMS?

● Very weird. Check the volume. When you ask for an alarm be sure she answers back acknowledging the alarm. Try Alexa "set timer for 1 minute" and wait to see if you listen to the alarm. Then you can try "Alexa set alarm for 2pm". Also be sure she has your correct time ask her " Alexa what time is it?" so you are sure she has the correct time of your city. Hope this helps!

● If she is acknowledging your request, she will say your alarm back to you, and your volume is up i would suggest you have a defective unit.

ECHO HAS BLUETOOTH?

● Before you can stream audio from your mobile device to Amazon Echo, you need to pair it. To pair the device, make sure it's turned on, set to pairing mode, and in range of your Amazon Echo. Note: Phone calls, text messages, and other notifications from your mobile device can't be received or read by Amazon Echo, and audio from Amazon Echo can't be sent to Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

● Yes, Echo has Bluetooth. You are able to pair devices such as a phone

● Yes, you can pair it to your phone or other Bluetooth devices

● Yes it can connect to a Bluetooth device

● Yes

CAN THIS BE USED FOR MOVIE SURROUND SOUND TYPE DEVICE WHEN CONNECTED TO A TV?ONE SPEAKER LIKE A SONOS SOUND BAR OR MULTIPLE OFFERING MOVIE EXPERIENCE?

● The Amazon Echo CANNOT be hooked up to anything or used in pairs, like the Sonos to create stereo sound. The Echo has no outputs of any kind. I love it for what it is, and what it is is a device that does what you tell it to do. "Alexa, play the the Bob Marley channel from Pandora" and she does!

● Alexia has Bluetooth so if your speaker has bt you could connect that way otherwise I don't know but ask a pro

MUST YOU HAVE AN AMAZON PRIME MEMBERSHIP TO USE ECHO?

● Nope, Amazon Prime isn't a requirement to use Echo. You would of course need Amazon Prime to use Prime specific features like Prime Music but there are other music options like radio and Pandora which will work.

● Not that I know of! I think things changed when Amazon opened it up to purchase without invitation

● I don't believe so. I've had great fun using Echo.

● No, Amazon Prime is not required.

● No, I don't think so.
