QUESTION: IS THE TOP OF THE DOUBLE BOILER STAINLESS STEEL?
Yes It Is. Heavy Gauge.
Yes, but I wouldn't call it heavy gauge (sorry, Robin!). it's not designed for cooking directly on a burner. I suspect things would burn on quickly. The bottom of the all-stainless pan is thin, so that it can function as a double-boiler (heat from boiling water in the base passes through the thinner bottom of the top pan to cook what's inside). All double-boilers are designed this way (thinner bottom on the top pan). The base pan, which is black and Teflon-lined, is definitely heavier and made for cooking on a stove top. The glass cover is nice for checking progress. I've had several double boilers in 60 years of cooking, and this one is the largest and the nicest. I got it for the extra capacity.
I believe so. It's not super heavy, but I've had it now for a couple of months and I still really like it. Definitely good quality for the price.
Yes

QUESTION: IS THE INSIDE OF THE TOP PORTION SMOOTH ALL OVER, OR IS THERE A GROOVE ON THE INSIDE FROM HOW THE LIP AROUND THE OUTSIDE IS FORMED?
There is a groove on the inside. It wasn't really problematic when cleaning it except that I had pay a little more attention to it.
Yes there is a groove but not a problem
It's smooth and fits perfectly

QUESTION: WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE BOTTOM PAN IN TERMS OF THE FOLLOWING--DIAMETER OF POT X HEIGHT OF POT X TOTAL LENGTH OF POT WITH DIAMETER AND HANDLE?
bottom pan diameter 8in X height of pot (depth) 3 1/2in x length of pot and handle 15 1/2in.
I don't know offhand; however this is a good 3 quart double boiler which will easily hold 3 quarts. I have used mine to make boiled custard and a few other things like cheese sauces etc. I bought this because my wife said to. She loves it and made a lot of boiled custard for new years and a big bunch of melted chocolate for dipping strawberries, having more than enough room each time. It's light, easy to handle heats well and is snug fitting. This is a good quality double boiler. I have been around 60+ years and seen a few this is the best I've seen or used. It's size is a huge advantage though I seldom need this big. It's 3 quarts + a bit. It's about 8 1/2 in across .

QUESTION: DOES THE UPPER SECTION HAVE A CAPACITY OF 2 QUARTS OR MORE? I REALIZE IT'S LABELED A 3 QUART, BUT THAT MAY REFER TO THE BOTTOM POT.
Yes, the top section is HUGE ! It can easily hold more than 2 qts.
Yes, it will hold 2 quarts or more. :)
Yes, it is at least 2 quarts. I am able to double my recipe when I make a cream pie.

QUESTION: WHAT IS THE EXACT CAPACITY OF THE ITEM? I NEED TO WARM 2.8 LITERS (~3 QUARTS) OF MILK AT A TIME AND IF IT CANNOT DO THAT, I HAVE NO USE FOR IT.
yes, I measured the capacity...3 qts. comes up to the top of the pan, with no room to spare, so if you have to stir it, you would have to take care not to go over the side of the pan...good luck, Howard
You could warm three quarts of milk in it but it would be pretty full. I use mine to make yogurt, and I put six cups of milk in it. This fills it about half way (1 quart equals 4 cups). So three quarts would be 12 cups - that would be pretty darn full.
The bottom pan is 3 quarts. For your purposes, you might want to select something closer to 5 quarts.

QUESTION: IS THE TOP PART 18/8(304) STEEL OR 18/10(316) STEEL? APPARENTLY ACID FOODS ARE TOUCHY WITH THE FORMER TO SOME DEGREE.
I could not find any markings on the double boiler to indicate the information you seek. How about contacting tefal.com?
I have no idea of the composition of the steel used in this product.

QUESTION: HOW MUCH WATER DO I PUT IN THE BOTTOM PAN?
usually half full
If you actually got the double boiler, i dont know. They sent me the wrong item. I actually received the steamer. If you got the steamer... It depends on what your cooking. Don't add so much that it will get into the top pan and boil your food. Just enough to steam your food.
I put enough water so its about an inch or so from top pot. Try different levels until you figure out what works for you. Hope that helps too!! %)
Just enough to not boil away if you will be cooking a long time. For chocolate, I usually do about half the bottom pan of water. That way, I shouldn't have to refill during each batch.

QUESTION: WHAT COUNTRY IS IT MADE IN?
USA
I just "googled" the product and it was made right here in the USA - good to know - glad you asked!!
It clearly says on my Package made in China!
This product clearly states on its packaging that it is made in China

QUESTION: THE DESCRIPTION SAYS THIS IS A DOUBLE BOILER, BUT THE PHOTO FOR THE STAINLESS STEEL SHOWS A STEAMER. WHICH IS IT?
It's a double boiler.
Double boiler
It is a steamer and a double boiler--ENJOY!!
For the style labeled "stainless steel", reviewers say it is a steamer and not a double boiler (Amazon should fix this!). If you click to show all reviews, you can select a filter to show only reviews for "Style Name: Stainless Steel" (in place of "All formats") and you will see the reviews for this one. (This looks like a recent mistake by Amazon since it looks like all of these questions and reviews started around the same time.)

QUESTION: DO BOTH POTS HAVE A HOLE IN THE END OF THE HANDLE FOR HANGING THE POTS?

Yes they do.
yes, both have holes for hanging - really nice pans too

QUESTION: WHY DOES THE STAINLESS STEEL VERSION LOOK LIKE THE TOP PAN HAS TINY HOLES ON THE BOTTOM AND THE NONSTICK VERSION DOES NOT?
Because the Stainless stell version is a steamer, not a double boiler.
the stainless steel version is a steamer, not a double boiler. the one pictured here is the actual double boiler. when you go to purchase, if you're looking for the double boiler, don't click the stainless steel version, as apparently they have lumped the 2 items together under one #, I found out the hard way, had to send the stainless steel one back and re-order the non-stainless steel one. hope that helped :)

QUESTION: IS THE TOP SECTION SUITABLE FOR BEATING EGGS WITH AN ELECTRIC MIXER WHILE MAKING CUSTARD?
No. It's perforated.
Not sure but it is a sturdy metal.
It might scratch; personally, I would use a wisk.
#T-fal_A90996_Review

QUESTION: WHAT COLOR IS THE BOTTOM PART?
bottom is dark charcoal gray...but it was made with a non-stick interior...no non-stick interior in top where you would actually bee cooking...very strange to put non-stick in the area where you just boil water...
The bottom of the top part is silver. The bottom is like the regular T-fal pan dark.
Black with a silver bottom.
It's black the same as the photo. It was exactly what I needed. I'm happy with this item
Gray

QUESTION: IS IT DISHWASHER SAFE?
I have put it in the dishwasher once or twice; however, I prefer to wash it by hand.
I don't use a dishwasher, but I would certainly think it's dishwasher safe.
Yes it is.
#T-fal_A90996

QUESTION: ARE THERE ANY OTHER PARTS THAT ARE SOLD SEPARATELY FOR THIS BOILER?
Not sure what you mean? Three pieces that I know of...bottom, top pots and the lid....
I don't know. Sorry.
Not that i know of.
Sorry. I honestly don't know. You might want to contact the manufacturer to see if they have other parts for this particular item.
I'm not sure what you are asking. It comes complete as a double boiler. What else would you use this for?

QUESTION: DOES THE BOTTOM POT HAVE A SMOOTH BOTTOM COMPATIBLE WITH A GLASS-TOP ELECTRIC RANGE?
Yes it does its a very nice pop

#T-fal_A90996_Review

QUESTION: IS THE TOP POT PERFORATED ON THE BOTTOM (LIKE A STEAMER) OR IS IT SOLID (LIKE FOR MELTING CHOCOLATE)?
The lid is glass, the top pot is all metal and the bottom pot has a anti stick coating. I absolutely love this for a double boiler. It works great!
Solid. I bought it to melt chocolate and it's perfect for that
The top pot IS SOLID. I find many uses for BOTH pots...THEY are among my favorites.
#T-fal_A90996_Specialty_Stainless_Steel

QUESTION: WHAT IS THE CAPACITY OF THE TOP PAN, THE ONE WHERE YOU WOULD PUT IN THE CHOCOLATE YOU ARE MELTING?
Just over 8 cups
About 0.5 gallons (8 cups)
#T-fal_A90996

QUESTION: ON THE ALL-STAINLESS MODEL, SPECIFICALLY, IS THE TOP PAN SOLID OR PERFORATED? PIC LOOKS PERFORATED.
Solid
yes - all-stainless model has a perforated steaming pan, not a solid double-boiler pan.
The stainless top pan was solid for me. I am not sure if there are variants that are perforated or not.
solid
The top pan is solid on the one I purchased as a double boiler. Works great
#Specialty_Stainless_Steel

QUESTION: INDUCTION COMPATIBLE?
No, it is not compatible. The bottom is not stainless steel.
Can't answer that. I cook with gas.
No idea. Sorry.

The stainless steel version is a steamer, don't waste your time. Not sure about the version with the coated pan.
